Future We Want Model: A Global Initiative 2019

The delegation of 5 students from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Karaganda participated at the Future We Want: A Global Initiative 2019 conference that was held in New York City from February 28 to March 3, 2019. This conference was organized with the support of the United Nations and the Italian Diplomatic Academy. It was the most inclusive conference held in New York for delegates from 136 countries around the world on all 17 sustainable development goals. The students of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Karaganda were the only representatives from the Republic of Kazakhstan and the entire post-Soviet countries.

About 1,500 young leaders gathered to participate in rigorous debates about critical issues that humanity is facing. At this event young leaders presented the position of various countries on global problems and offered their own solutions.

On the first day of the FWWMUN conference, the young delegates had the opportunity to meet outstanding people in the field of peacemaking and diplomacy. The first woman president of the Rotary Club, Helen Reisler gave a motivational speech. She shared her memories of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and inspired the delegates to develop leadership skills for the benefit of the whole world. Hanifa Mezoui, Ph.D., who has worked for the United Nations for more than 25 years and has experience in implementing the Millennium Development Goals, spoke about the United Nations system and its internship program, which provides young people with the access to the United Nations.

On March 1, 2019, the sessions of 9 committees began; delegates were discussing issues taken from the agenda of the United Nations. Our students at the conference were working in the Economics and Finance Committee, the Committee for Disarmament and International Security, and the Committee for the United Nations Assembly on the Environment. Within 3 days, there were hot debates on critical issues of the world, following which delegates developed resolutions to resolve these issues.

At the end of the FWWMUN conference (Future We Want Model: A Global Initiative 2019), our students Sembekova Anara and Azimbayev Alisher, who worked at the Committee of Economics and Finance and represented the Comoros Islands, were awarded the Best Delegates. To address the issue of providing access to low-cost, sustainable and modern energy sources, our students suggested the creation of a liberal market in the African continent, as well as the creation of a universal set of rules for investment for all countries of the world.

In addition to the sessions of the Committees, a number of social and cultural events were held for the delegates, during which the leaders had the opportunity to get to know each other and build partnership between their institutions. The carnival of people all around the world, which took place on March 2, marked the rapprochement of cultures from all over the world. Students of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Karaganda represented the Republic of Kazakhstan at this event and learned a lot about the traditions and culture of other countries.

This conference brought together enthusiastic leaders from all over the world, thus enabling younger generation to obtain direct experience in international relations, develop high-quality resolutions aimed at achieving the future we want, and present these resolutions to relevant UN agencies and world leaders for consideration. It was a great honor and privilege for the delegation of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Karaganda to be chosen to participate in this conference from thousands of applicants from all over the world and to represent Kazakhstan at such a global event.
